Scientific
Electronics Pty Ltd was incorporated
on 9th February 1968, and in the
1970s the company was firmly
established. The aim of Scientific
Electronics was to design and
manufacture a wide range of
instrumentation including power
supplies, frequency counters and
digital multimeters. In the first 10
years, Scientific Electronics went
from a home-garage operation to
designing and manufacturing OEM
(original equipment manufacture) and
bench type power supply units in a
factory operation.
The 80s saw a
name change to SETEC, and a
concentration on the design and
manufacture of multi rail switchmode
power supplies for OEM customers.
This is one of the main reasons for
our growth today. In 1985 SETEC was
awarded the Victorian and Australian
Small Business Award and became
internationally approved: UL, BABT,
TUV, & other international
approvals. AS3901/ISO9001
accreditation.
In the 90s
SETEC concentrated on acquiring
accreditation in the design and
manufacturing of power supplies. As a
result, our customer base grew
rapidly and we soon became recognised
as the foremost quality producer of
custom designed power supplies in
Australia. This gave SETEC the
ability to build its current business
and identify new opportunities.
Achievements
included: Power Supplies - Collins
Radio to supply their RAAF contract
Power Supplies - Information
Electronics for Visual Display Units
(VDU’s) for Ansett Airlines
passenger booking systems. Custom
designed and produced switching type
DC-DC converters for various
telecommunications clients. Designed
and produced multi–rail switchmode
power supplies for AWA for
VDU’s.
In September
1999, SETEC moved to a new purpose
built manufacturing facility. This
new Australian Headquarters boasts
over 2,500 square metres (27,000
square feet) of modern factory and
stores floor space, including
antistatic, electrostatic discharge
(ESD) proof flooring, covering 1500
square metres. This in-house
manufacturing operation provides
SETEC with a strategic edge, as it
enables the streamlining of SETEC’s
time-to-market design process.
In the mid 1990s, SETEC began
designing and manufacturing units for
Aristocrat, for their gaming
machines. Within a few years the
total number of Aristocrat units
produced exceeded 100,000 .
SETEC’s
customer base soon expanded globally
to embrace a diverse range of
industry sectors including: gaming,
communications, medical/scientific,
recreational vehicles, lighting,
information technology equipment and
automotive.
The new
millennium saw SETEC move into an era
of manufacturing focused on ‘custom
design’ power solutions. In 2002
SETEC spent nearly one million
dollars upgrading the surface mount
line to include a Universal HSP
rotary turret machine utilizing 16
heads each with five nozzles and a
run rate of 36,000 components per
hour, keeping manufacturing costs to
a minimum.
In 2004 SETEC
was awarded funding by the Australian
Government’s R&D Start Program.
This funding contributed to the
development and commercialisation of
a fixed frequency resonant power
converter.
Now in 2010, our Research and Development
department has expanded by 50%, and
we are now recognised as the foremost
quality producer of custom design
power supplies in Australia, and
gaining a significant reputation
globally.
