Setec’s Product Development Process is broken up into 6 phases:
Concept phase - Involves commercial and technical negotiations with a customer. It sets the framework for the project eg. Timelines, budget and technical requirements.
Design phase - Top down design of product by R&D. Input and Feedback sought from Manufacturing, Test Engineering and Purchasing and the customer.
Realisation phase - Design is taken to a build level, tested and re-worked
Build 1 – Initial build from Design Phase
Build 2 – Next build due to result of testing Build 1 units
Compliance Build - These are units specifically built for submission to the Approvals agencies and samples are given to customers.
Pilot phase - Allows for building of units using final documentation, typically used for pre-production and sample runs for customers.
Production phase - 1st run with compliant units.
Summary of the development process
The product development process starts with a structured “commercial specification” which results from uncovering a customer or prospect opportunity and is the outcome from the concept phase. The “design documentation” is the result of the design phase and is based on the commercial specification.
The realisation stage of the development process comprises of two Build phases. The purpose of these two phases is to allow for the development, and subsequent refinement, of the manufacturing plan and provide product samples for testing and design review. Following the last design review, toward the end of the second Build phase, the design specification is frozen and the design documentation updated to reflect the final product configuration. The outcome of this phase is the “released” product.
The pilot phase proves the ability of manufacturing by a defined amount of produced pieces. The compliance phase starts during the pilot phase and runs in parallel with this phase and can continue during the following production phase. The outcome of the production phase is the first production run and supply of product to the customer.
A process review is held by the complete project team after the completion of the production phase.
